Bathtub Safety: Tips On Bathing Your Baby Safely

Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 1 to 14 and children can drown in as little as one inch of water. Children ages 4 and under have the highest drowning death rate (two to three times greater than other age groups) and account for 80 percent of home drownings. When it comes to water safety think beyond pools and lakes … think bathtubs, toilets, standing buckets of water, coolers and mop water.
Even empty bathtubs can be dangerous! A young child who was sick was placed in an empty bathtub and the mother walked away for a few minutes to get things to clean the child. When she came back the water was running an the child was unresponsive and later died. Never leave a child unattended for even a second. If you need to leave the bathroom, take the baby or child with you.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has put together a list of water safety tips to help prevent young children from drowning:
- Before you begin bathing your child, have all supplies within arm’s reach and in front of you
- Do not rely on older children to watch a baby for you
- Never leave to answer the phone, answer the door, to get a towel or for any other reason. If you must leave, take the baby with you
- A baby bath seat is not a substitute for supervision. A bath seat is a bathing aid, not a safety device. Babies have slipped or climbed out of bath seats and drowned. In fact, there has been a petition to have bath seats banned and some bath seats have been recalled
- Never leave a child unattended while filling the bathtub and always empty bath water immediately after use
- Test water temperature with your elbow or a thermometer. Temperature should be between 90 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit
Other general water safety tips:
- Never leave a bucket containing even a small amount of liquid unattended. When finished using a bucket, always empty it immediately. Store buckets where young children cannot reach them
- Buckets, accessible to children, that are left outside to collect rainwater are a hazard
- Always secure safety covers and barriers to prevent children from gaining access to spas or hot tubs when not in use. Some non-rigid covers, such as solar covers, can allow a small child to slip in the water and the cover would appear to still be in place
- Keep the toilet lid down to prevent access to the water and consider using a toilet clip to stop young children from opening the lids. Consider placing a latch on the bathroom door out of reach of young children
- Learn CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) for infants and small children– it can be a lifesaver when seconds count
Help “Toxic Tub” Go Down The Drain
Manufacturers have known for years that bubble bath, shampoo and other products contain small amounts of the preservatives formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane but it is now coming to the public attention that children’s bath products contain chemicals that may cause cancer and skin allergies, according to a report released by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Twenty-three of 28 products tested contained formaldehyde, a toxic chemical which is also part of embalming chemicals.
Despite marketing claims like “gentle” and “pure,” dozens of top-selling children’s bath products are contaminated with the cancer-causing chemicals formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane, according to the March 2009 Campaign for Safe Cosmetics report, "No More Toxic Tub."
Thirty-two of 48 products contained 1,4-dioxane, also considered a probable human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is a byproduct of a chemical processing techniques used to make petroleum-based ingredients gentler to the skin. Nearly two-thirds of products tested, including Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, contained both chemicals, according to the campaign, a coalition of environmental and health groups that includes the Breast Cancer Fund and the Environmental Working Group. Analytical Sciences, an independent laboratory in Petaluma, Calif., performed the tests.
A spokeswoman for Johnson & Johnson told USA Today that the company’s products are safe, meeting or exceeding all regulations. And a spokesman for the Personal Care Products Council says the study’s results are old news. Really? This is the first we have heard of it?
For the complete list of products with carcinogens, see USA Today’s coverage of the report.

You may have never guessed it’s Bamboo! There are many reasons to love Bamboo. It is one of the most eco-friendly plants on earth and is a renewable and sustainable resource because it grows very quickly. Bamboo can be turned into a natural textile by processing the pulp of bamboo grass.
When Bamboo is turned into ecofriendly fabric it becomes softer than the softest cotton making it an ideal choice for Bellylaf’s line of products. Bamboo is 100% biodegradable, does not require fertilizers or pesticides to grow and has natural antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties. Find out for yourself how wonderful Bamboo feels to the skin. Try our Grippees™ or MiniMitts™ washmitts today!
BellyLaf Product Line Complies with CPSIA Laws
BellyLaf’s entire product line of Grippees™ and MiniMitts™ wash mitts has been thoroughly tested by a CPSC approved lab called Consumer Testing Laboratories, Inc., based in Bentonville, Arkansas, and fully complies with the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).
Every single thread of our Grippees™ and MiniMitts™apparently passed the rigorous testing. Although our product line is all made from the same material (60% bamboo/40% cotton) each appliqué in our line needed to be tested which amounted to 10 different SKUs! We have now have received our General Conformity Certificates (GCCs) for our entire product line. Other companies will not be so fortunate as us and may go out of business due to the new laws as the cost for testing are high for products composed of plastic, metal or chemical substances.

Say Goodbye To Those Dirty Old Washcloths!

Wash cloths and wash mitts have numerous problems ranging from massive shrinkage to outdated designs to “durable” fabrics (sandpaper?). Square washcloths are problematic because they roll and gather in your hands while most wash mitts are designed as puppets instead of as practical washing aids. A giant duck bill sticking out on the front of a wash cloth is not exactly practical when it comes to cleaning between small little toes and in sensitive areas.

EcoFriendly “Echo” Having A Whale of a Good Time

My name is Echo! If you can’t find me, just look below the surface of the water. I have a whale of a good time diving down deep into the ocean. That’s where I compose my tunes. I sing long songs and short songs and they bounce like waves to all my friends. When I sing, all of the sea creatures, especially Cosmo, dance along to my happy tunes. Do you like to sing and dance?
